Transforming a home for young people in Ensenada: working with our colleagues and friends in Mexico

Our club recently spent a weekend outside of Ensenada, working to paint, clean, update and renovate facilities at the CASUNAM Children’s home, which houses a total of 42 girls (newborn to 18) and boys (newborn to 9 years old).

None of this would have been possible without the collaborative efforts of our friends from Rotario Ensenada Todos Santos, as well as a strong contingent of young people from Rotaract Ensenada Todos Santos, Rotaract San Diego State University, University of San Diego and UC San Diego.

About 90 Rotarians, Rotaractors, families and friends worked to paint the facility and the playground and distribute stuffed animals, toys and sports equipment.  Our club donated more than $4K in supplies and labor and is spending another $3,500 to put a new roof on the 5,000 sq. foot facility.

La Jolla Golden Triangle Past President, Ron Kohl and 2017-18 President Alex Monroe joined Past District Governor Fernando Favela-Vara Rotary District 4100 of Baja California along with Luis Hernandez of Rotario Ensenada Todos Santos and others to welcome the volunteers.  Special thanks to Past President and team leader Jim Davies for organizing all the supplies and planning the workloads as well as all the other team leaders, Jim Frost, Alex Monroe, Ron Kohl, Tony Grillo, Erik Mjoen and Brett Morey.

This year, organizers added a little more fun to the fellowship as Past President of LJGT Rotary Club, Brett Morey (Founder of Surfers Unite Rotarian Fellowship) along with SURF members Michael Slentz and Erik Mjoen took 22 Rotaractors surfing at Playa Hermosa.  Special thanks to Ensenada Todos Santos Rotaractors Enirique Sánchez and David Padilla for helping drive everyone to the beach as well as Manuel of Spot SurfCo for opening up at 6:30AM to hand out boards and wetsuits.  It was a terrific way to enjoy time together.

As always it was a fabulous day spent demonstrating
