Regular in-person club meeting Followed by Peace Committee
Sep 19, 2025 7:00 AM
Today we welcome Dr. Divya Kakaiya, a fellow Rotarian (Club 33) and a Board Member of San Diego Crimestoppers.

Her topic: Safer and Peaceful Communities - Crimestoppers and Students Speaking Out.

Both programs are anonymous tip lines where citizens are able to report crimes to two full time law enforcement officers (one with SDPD and one with Sheriff's Dept.)

These organizations have taken 16 guns off of local High School campuses. "Those are 16 mass shootings we have prevented in San Diego schools,” said Dr. Kakaiya. "The students are able to report 100% anonymously so we do not worry about them fearing that they have snitched!”

Special in-person meeting - Halloween costumes optional!
Oct 31, 2025 7:00 AM
NOTE: It's Halloween! Members and guests are encouraged/welcome to dress in costume (not mandatory!)

We welcome Rita Hanscom, world class Master's Track & Field Champion, speaking on "How to be an athlete in the last half of your life."

Here's a look at Rita's incredible, inspirational story:

Rita Hanscom is an attorney, wife, mother, and a remarkable example of resilience in athletics. A graduate of the University of Hawai‘i and Boston College Law School, she has built a distinguished career in public service, working in the California Attorney General’s Office, where she investigates health-care fraud.
Around age 47, after reading about Masters track and field, she resolved to learn pole vaulting—and that decision began a second chapter of extraordinary achievement.

Rita has competed in Masters events both nationally and around the world, earning accolades, winning medals and breaking records. In addition to five gold medals, she earned a world record in the heptathlon at the 2009 World Masters Championships in Lahti, Finland, and that year was honored as the Best Masters Female Athlete in the World.

In 2025, at the USA Track & Field Masters Indoor Championships, competing in the women’s 70–74 pentathlon, Rita tallied 3,682 points, setting a new American age-division record. She also cleared 1.23 m in the high jump, ran 12.71 s in the 60m hurdles, and helped her 4×200 relay team break another American record.

Rita has overcome two Achilles tendon injuries with trademark determination—staying active through recovery and proving that movement fuels healing. Her philosophy: stay active to heal and to thrive.
As she says, “One of the greatest gifts you can give your children is to remain healthy and independent.”

SPECIAL MEMORIAL DAY PROGRAM:
NAVY VETERAN RICK CLARK TO SHARE HIS RECENT "HONOR FLIGHT" TO WASHINGTON, DC

In honor of Memorial Day - coming up on November 11 - our in-person meeting on November 7 will feature our very own Rick Clark, a Navy Veteran who served his country as a member of the Seabees during the Vietnam War.

Rick will be fresh off a weekend trip to Washington D.C. with Honor Flight San Diego - a non-profit organization that transports veterans - free of charge - to our nation's capital to visit the memorials built for their sacrifice and to honor them for their dedication.

On September 26, Rick will fly with 90-100 other veterans of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, with all expenses paid by Honor Flight San Diego.  [For more information on this amazing program: https://www.honorflightsandiego.org/2024/02/05/honor-flight-to-washington-d-c-sept-30-to-oct-2/]

In addition to his distinguished career in the Navy, Rick has dedicated decades of his life to La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary, including helping to organize dozens of hands-on service projects, producing professional-quality videos and graphics, providing architectural drawings for numerous buildings in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, and instigating/organizing Operation Flags for Vets at Miramar National Cemetery.

Join us for this special Memorial Day program!

It is an honor to welcome our District Governor Luis Carranza to update us on activities, accomplishments and challenges around District 5340.

Born in Tijuana, Baja California, and raised in San Diego, California, Luis Carranza represents the spirit of borderless service, unity, and opportunity that defines Rotary.  At just 7 years old, Luis crossed from one country into another, but more importantly, he began a journey that would lead him across cultures, industries, and communities with one mission: to uplift others.

Luis’s early years were shaped by music, empathy, and service. As a violinist with the San Diego Youth Symphony, he performed across continents.  As a teen who volunteered at Grossmont Hospital, he began understanding the transformative power of compassion. After studying Economics at the University of California, San Diego, Luis built a 20+ year career in the mortgage industry, where he currently works as a Senior Loan Officer with PrimeLending.  But it was his heart for community that led him to Rotary.

Ben Meyer, Supervisory Special Agent, FBI

The FBI's Cyber Program and current cyber threat landscape

Jan 23, 2026 6:45 AM

Today we welcome the FBI Supervisory Special Agent Ben Meyer for an overview on cyber crime in San Diego and beyond. The FBI San Diego Field Office is fresh off the the seizure and shut down of a web domain used to defraud Americans through cryptocurrency investment-fraud scams. According to the Dec. 4 edition of the San Diego Union-Tribune, more than 400 San Diegans were among the victims of Southeast Asia-based criminal enterprise, suffering an estimated cumulative loss of roughly $90 million in fiscal 2024. The paper notes: "However, federal investigators said they believe that figure to be a fraction of the total scope of losses, given that many victims do not report their losses to law enforcement." Join us for this important discussion of cyber crime - which, as we have just seen -can impact all of us.

Jacobs Music Center Tour - Feb. 13th
Feb 13, 2026 7:45 AM - 9:00 AM
Join us to tour San Diego’s newest crown jewel, the Jacobs Music Center, on Friday, February 13

If you haven’t seen the newly renovated Jacobs Music Center, you are in for a treat on Friday, February 13 at 8 am.

Join us for a one-hour tour of this historic venue, originally built in 1929 as the Fox Theatre, but now a truly world class concert hall. The recently completed $125 million enhancement includes reconfigured seating, theatrical lighting to showcase the building’s ornate Rococo design, and the addition of a choral terrace behind the orchestra, where guests can sit when that area is not in use for a performance.

The home of our city’s incredible San Diego Symphony will welcome La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotarians in groups of 20 for a one-hour tour beginning at 8 am, so please RSVP early. There is no cost, but you’re on your own for parking. (With any luck, you can find street parking or use a neighboring parking lot.)
