Please join us on June 5, when we have the distinct privilege of welcoming one of American higher education's most accomplished leaders — Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla of UC San Diego.

Consider the scope of what he oversees: a flagship research university of more than 46,000 students, twelve academic and professional schools, eight undergraduate residential colleges, a world-class health system, and the legendary Scripps Institution of Oceanography. It is, by any measure, an extraordinary enterprise — and Chancellor Khosla has not merely managed it, but transformed it. Register today to reserve a spot!

In-person meeting
In-person meeting Jun 05, 2026 7:00 AM Ida & Cecil Green Faculty Club
Today, we are honored to welcome other La Jolla-area Rotary clubs for a special presentation from UCSD Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla

As UC San Diego’s chief executive officer, Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla provides vision and strategy, leading a campus of more than 46,000 students within 12 academic, professional and graduate schools and eight undergraduate residential colleges; a preeminent health system; and the prestigious Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
Khosla initiated and led UC San Diego’s first-ever Strategic Plan and the ambitious 10-year, $2 billion Campaign for UC San Diego. The Campaign raised $3.05 billion, exceeding its original goal by more than $1 billion, and making UC San Diego the youngest institution ever to complete a multi-billion-dollar fundraising campaign. During his tenure, Khosla has initiated more than $12 billion in capital improvements to expand health care services, classrooms and research space, double the number of on-campus housing units and enhance the student experience.
Under Chancellor Khosla’s leadership, UC San Diego has expanded college access and affordability for underserved students, initiated campuswide interdisciplinary research initiatives to foster collaboration and solve societal challenges, created bench-to-bedside patient care, and strengthened research and community partnerships to drive regional impact.

This special meeting includes the official Passing of the Gavel and a presentation from Cameron Mofid, who at age 25 became the youngest person to visit every country in the world - including North Korea.

Kicking off the program, President David Chong will give us a look-back at the highlights of his year as he officially passes the gavel to President-Elect Tim Fronczek. La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary will salute the leadership of this very special individual, whose kindness, enthusiasm and professionalism led us during another year of change and reflection.

Then we turn to our speaker, Cameron Mofid, whose program is entitled "Redefine What's Possible."

Growing up with debilitating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), Cameron set out on a seven-year trip as a form of real-world exposure therapy. During that time, he traversed war zones, was detained in jail cells, and ventured through some of the most remote places on Earth.

Today, Cameron draws on his experiences to share practical insights on overcoming fear, navigating uncertainty, and redefining what we believe is possible.

He is also the founder of Humanity Effect, a nonprofit organization that has supported more than 1,000 children through two schools and an orphanage in Lagos, Nigeria. His story and work have been featured in major media, including CNN, Forbes, CBS, FOX, BBC, and Business Insider.

Sou Fang, M.Arch
Director, TRIO Upward Bound, Institute of College Initiatives, University of San Diego

Sou Fang will present Upward Bound: Empowering Students, Families, and Communities, including a tribute to our dear, beloved Dr. Cynthia Villis, whose vision and leadership was instrumental in establishing Upward Bound at the University of San Diego.

WINTER '26: THE COMING STORMS

WINTER '26: THE COMING STORMS

Veteran Union-Tribune reporter Gary Robbins will discuss some of the ways that the U-T is preparing for El Nino coverage this fall/winter, and how it will collaborate with first responders.

About Gary Robbins

Maine native Gary Robbins decided to become a newspaper reporter in December 1972 when he saw His Girl Friday, a comedic newspaper movie starring Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell. About a month later, a weekly newspaper debuted near his home outside Bar Harbor, Maine. He asked its editor for a shot at writing and got it.

Robbins went on to journalism school at Northeastern University in Boston. In 1980, he joined an afternoon newspaper in Hollywood, Florida and covered, among other things, the Cuban boat lift and Haitian boatlift. He later moved on to the Orange County Register, where he spent 25 years as a science and technology writer. He joined The San Diego Union-Tribune in 2010 and now covers science and research universities, the military and the weather.

Robbins was a Knight Science Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He later taught journalism at USC and Cal State Long Beach. He is married to Diana McCabe, the U-T's business editor. They have a cat, Sweet Pea, who basically does nothing 35 hours a day.

Artificial Intelligence: Do Not Be Afraid. Knowledge is Power.
Sammy Tse Artificial Intelligence: Do Not Be Afraid. Knowledge is Power. Sep 18, 2026

Artificial Intelligence: Do Not Be Afraid. Knowledge is Power.

Samson Marcos Tse is a software engineer who has spent his whole life in California and still managed to move constantly: raised on computers, he has called San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco home, collecting traffic complaints and tech jobs in every one of them.

He was there for the last AI rush, building systems at IBM Watson, and he is here for the current one, leading engineering efforts at Unity Technologies, where he helped build the Unity Rewards platform used by players around the world. Along the way he has cofounded a startup, designed backend systems that process billions of transactions a day, taught kids to code, and built games purely for the fun of it, proof that a decade in the industry has not entirely ruined his sense of play.

Samson describes himself as an AI expert, but not an expert on AI, a distinction he promises to explain. A dedicated Rotarian who has led numerous service projects across his community, he believes technology belongs to everyone willing to learn it. His message is simple: do not be afraid. Knowledge is power.

Trust in American Elections Headed toward the 2026 Midterms
Thad Kousser Trust in American Elections Headed toward the 2026 Midterms Oct 16, 2026

About the Program

As Americans prepare to vote in another critical contest, do they trust that it will be a free and fair election and that ballots will be counted accurately?

Professor Thad Kousser will share findings from a new national survey on trust in elections and draw on the work of a team of scholars centered at UC San Diego that partners with election officials across the country. Since the 2020 election, these officials have conducted public-information campaigns designed to provide voters with factual, nonpartisan information about election safeguards. The research team has supplied rigorous, real-time data to support those efforts and strengthen public confidence in American democracy. This timely discussion will examine the lessons learned and what they mean as the nation approaches the 2026 midterms.

About Thad Kousser

Thad Kousser is a professor of political science at UC San Diego and an associate dean of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs. He co-directs the Center for Transparent and Trusted Elections and the Yankelovich Center for Social Science Research. His research focuses on American state and national politics, election administration, voting reforms, direct democracy, public opinion, and trust in elections.

Professor Kousser joined the UC San Diego faculty in 2003 and served as chair of the Department of Political Science from 2016 to 2022. He has worked as a staff assistant in the California, New Mexico, and United States Senates and regularly comments on American politics for outlets including NPR, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Politico, The Hill, Los Angeles Times, and San Diego Union-Tribune. He received his B.A. from Harvard University and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.
