San Diego enjoys a diverse legacy of formidable female leaders. Ellen Browning Scripps financed and established the Scripps Institute of Oceanography. In 1927, Belle Benchley became the nation's first female zoo director and for nearly thirty years pioneered new forms of exhibition and developed the world-class San Diego Zoo. Ruth Alexander set new altitude records for light planes at the peak of the city's aviation boom. Bertha Pendleton became the first female and first African-American San Diego school superintendent in 1993.

Dr. Gloria Harris, co-author of Remarkable Women of San Diego (the History Press, 2016) will share the stories of these and many other extraordinary local women.

Dr. Harris began her career as a clinical psychologist in the early seventies after receiving her doctorate from the University of Washington. She co-authored the groundbreaking book, Assertive Training for Women (1975), and edited a textbook, The Group Treatment of Human Problems (1977). She also co-authored Surviving Infidelity (2005); Women Trailblazers of California (2012), and Remarkable Women of San Diego (2016).

   Dr. Harris has been appointed to numerous boards and commissions and previously was appointed by the Board of Supervisors to serve on the San Diego County Commission on the Status of Women (Chair: 2000) and the County Mental Health Board (Chair: 2009). She has been nominated by Mental Health America as Volunteer of the Year (2010) and inducted into the San Diego Women’s Hall of Fame (2010).

He is also a prolific author with 30 books translated into over 50 foreign language editions, including the newly revised, best-selling The NEW Art of Managing People; Charisma; The Platinum Rule; Collaborative Selling; and Communicating at Work.

He is featured in over 100 audio/video programs and films, including DISC Relationship Strategies; The Dynamics of Effective Listening; and Gaining the EDGE in Competitive Selling. He is also the originator of the internationally recognized behavioral style assessment tool - The Platinum Rule®.

Dr. Alessandra was inducted into the NSA Speakers Hall of Fame in 1985. Andrew M. Lowy, MD serves as Professor of Surgery, Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology and Leader of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Unit at the Moores UCSD Cancer Center. Dr. Lowy ‘s clinical and research interests are in the area of pancreatic and gastrointestinal cancer. Since 2005, Dr. Lowy has served as the surgical liaison for the Pancreatic Cancer Committee of the Southwest Oncology Group. From 2007-2016 he served as co-chair for the National Cancer Institute’s Pancreatic Cancer Task Force, and was elected chair in 2016. Dr. Lowy also serves on the board of the National Pancreas Foundation and as chair elect of the scientific and medical advisory board for the Pancreatic Cancer Action network. Currently, Dr. Lowy serves as the surgical principal investigator of RTOG 0848, the largest pancreatic cancer adjuvant trial ever to be conducted in the U.S. He previously served on the editorial board of the Annals of Surgical Oncology as section editor for pancreatic tumors, and has served as section editor for translational research since 2015. Dr. Lowy’s laboratory co-developed the first genetically engineered mouse model of pancreatic cancer and currently focuses on the study of tyrosine kinase signaling, preclinical therapeutics and preclinical modeling in pancreatic cancer. His laboratory has been continuously funded by the NIH since 1999.

Garner A. Palenske and his family live in San Diego, California. A native Californian, he grew up exploring the mining camps of the Mojave Desert. Mr. Palenske earned bachelor degrees in both engineering and business from California State University, Fullerton. He works as a vice president of a consulting engineering firm and has worked on many historical building restorations. An accomplished researcher, Mr. Palenske has published several engineering research projects.

Mr. Palenske’s first history book “Wyatt Earp in San Diego, Life After Tombstone” was published in 2012. This critically acclaimed work was the first academic treatment of this exciting period in Earp’s life. Since then he has been published in True West Magazine and presented papers at the Arizona History Convention (2015, 2016 and 2017), and the Tombstone Territorial Rendezvous (many times).

Palenske is a member of the Wild West History Association and the San Diego History Center. He is also serves as the historian for the First San Diego Court House Museum in Old Town San Diego.

Heath Fox is the Executive Director of the La Jolla Historical Society. He was previously the Assistant Dean of Arts and Humanities at the University of California, San Diego; Director of Administration at the San Diego Museum of Art; and Associate Director for Administration at the Museum of Photographic Arts. He holds an MA in Museum Studies from the University of Leicester and a BS in Business Finance from Virginia Tech. He is a graduate of the Getty Leadership Institute’s museum management program and the Harvard Business School executive education program. He served on the Arts Commission for the city of Carlsbad, California; on the Board of Trustees of the Balboa Art Conservation Center; and on the Board of Directors of Balboa Park Central.
